Spelling variants:
Stanley cup

n. Hockey, Sports

the trophy emblematic of the professional hockey championship of the world, named for Lord Stanley, Governor General of Canada, 1888-93.

Type: 1. Origin The Stanley Cup is one of the most emblematic sports times with a Canada connection. Some would say it is prototypically Canadian, although it is competed for by teams from both Canada and the US. For the uninitiated the Stanley Cup, in Canadian French Le Coup Stanley, should be conceived of as the "Canadian National Hockey Cup" even though it has not gone to a Canadian team since 1993. The majority of the NHL League's players, however, continue to hail from Canada.
